Freshman Orientation Recap Freshman Orientation Recap Please look at the recap video of our freshman orientation Show Transcript good evening parents students Guardians and the class of 2030 I would like to introduce myself my name is Lana Litvin and I'm your principal yeah whatever it's okay I promise my address is not that long but I would like to share a few things I know you have a lot of questions and we'll try to answer them and if at the end of the presentation when all of us present if you have more questions there's a lot of people going to stay behind to answer questions that you have so I'm going to start off with students I want you to look around this room is filled with your future Lab Partners teammates long friends and maybe even a few 2 people who will challenge your thinking and let you think entirely new way sorry today marks the official start of your high school journey and we could not be more excited to have you here High School is Monumental Blank Slate it's time to figure it out who you are what you love and where you want to go and the best way to do this just jump into it first thing first High School school is so much more than just classes and exams there are so many opportunities for you to get engaged in activities outside of the classroom whether it's joining the sports team writing for school newspaper coding in robotics club or audition for the spring musical find something that speaks to you getting involved is absolute best way to make this big school feel like home but again don't just stick to what you already know you're good at I challenge each and every 1 of you to try classes and activities outside of your comfort zone sign up for the art class even like me you can only draw stick figures take the into computer science class or public speaking course growth doesn't have when you play it safe it happens when you dare to try something new and risk making a few mistakes along the way now let's talk about this secret recipe to keep you stress level low and a great High it's really boiling down to only 2 things do your work on time and don't leave anything to the last minute the pace of high school moves faster than the middle school I'm going to say this again the pace in high school moves way faster than Middle School procrastination is a trap staying on top of your daily assignments means you won't find yourself stressed out good night pulling it all studying for the test or a quiz the second thing is advocate for yourself your teachers are here because they want you to succeed but they don't read your minds they can't do that if you don't understand something or you falling behind or you just need an extra help speak up email your teacher stay after class to talk to them ask for help is sign of it's not a sign of weakness it's a superpower power to help you stay focused and make the most of your 9 great we need you to talk about few very important things regarding this everybody knows what it is I hope you do okay coming already in year 2 of the cell phone policies as part of New York State destruction preschool policy we have a strict system here that um in place to keep your hallway and classroom Focus some learning and not on screens each of you in the end of in September will be assigned a cell phone pouch which looks like this it's not the under it's a little bit different hold on it makes that noise it makes that noise when you open in class okay okay so this is how it works the moment you walk into the school building your personal device the self and the earpieces has to be put inside of the pouch when you enter the school somebody from the staff will be there checking that you put the cell phone and not your calculator or a fake phone or a second phone the real phone and a okay you must show the pouch in order to enter the school your phone must remain inside locked in here throughout the whole day in the hallway during class in the bathroom in the cafeteria in the library in the staircases I suggest if you don't want to lose it you keep it in your backpack you will get a detailed 6-page policy I'm just kidding 2 page policy in September everybody understand this pouches because if you don't then we have to take it away from you your parents have to come I don't think you need that that's first thing okay any questions so far even if you do know what's your question okay so the question is if I get caught in a hole by using the phone do you really want to know what happens okay so this is what happens you go to the Dean's office or my office your parents have to be called you get on the list of the thing you don't want to be on don't use the phone is that the bottom line everybody okay sometimes I make jokes they're lame but okay okay so now next piece um my team can you get me a PTA here where are they oh no no okay before hold on 1 second okay I also know that the high school is a team effort and that team includes the families we recognize that to be a successful in school our children need support from both home and school as a parent or Guardian your involvement with your child's School experience is extremely important we know that the strong partnership with you will make a significant difference in your child's education this year we incredibly excited to launch a new program designed to increase parent engagement we'll talk a little bit more when we do the PowerPoint through this new program parents will be able to see period to buy period attendance daily I think this is the biggest concern on high school kids come to school and then they disappear or they walk the Halls this program will allow your life like almost the same time to see if the kids is present in each and every class yeah that's will eliminate a lot of issues okay we want to make sure everybody on the same page it's also introduced a much simpler system of communication between the teachers and the staff and the families I cost you as a principle of Nutri high school I'm not only accessible to your students but also to you I will work hard to keep you informed about what's happening in our school and the community you will hear from us a lot via the email phone call and please check our website okay also encourage you to stay involved by joining our wonderful PTA you all received the shirts and participate in our events it is fantastic way to meet other parents and play an important role making a positive difference in your child's School experiences at this point before I'll there are 4 QR codes linking to 3 programming surveys and the student directory I'd now like to introduce Miss Scala the amazing Miss Scala who will walk you through the programming surveys and share more information about our academic programs thank you again for joining us we can't wait to get to know you welcome to New Utrecht High School all right hello everyone congratulations I know some of you are graduating tomorrow so we'll try to make this as brief as we can Welcome to the New York family parents now is not the time to be hands off with your student a lot of parents feel like I got them to high school I don't have to check homework I don't have to ask if they're studying that is the is the furthest from the truth here is now what we have um a saying in the guidance Department big kids equal big problems that happens when a parent is hands off so please parents you're here tonight because you care about your child continue to do that ask them about Homer ask them if have any tests go on their Google Classroom you could join every Google Classroom so you can get notification and you can also see what is due and the assignments that are due be an active participant in your child's education don't just leave it up to us we're here to help you but we need you also to do your part as a parent so as we speak I just want to go over some important information our website Savannah next slide okay our website is full of information and it is updated continuously if you need any information you want to check the calendar please go on the website it might be a little bit outdated right now cuz we're in the middle of our regions um so we haven't been updating as much but come in August the last couple weeks of August a lot of updated information will be there so please click on the website there's a lots of tabs that you can click on and get information every parent in here should have a New York schools account if you already have 1 from Junior High School it will roll over after your child graduates so you'll see at some point in the middle of the summer it the junior high school will leave and the high school New York will come up if you do not have a code or you have to be reset our parent coordinator can do that for you you can email her you can call her you could see her tonight if you don't have a code if you're coming from a private school or a charter school will help you log on to your account but this H this is the account that you could check the standard uh all the regions scores you can check grades and attendance so there's a lot of information on this account so please make sure you check on it you have a creation code and it's for you it's this is not for your student your student will have a different account this is for the parent account some of our other accounts that we have is obviously your child has a doe Google email if you are new to the doe your child does have an email you might not have uh logged on to it yet so we can help you reset your password or help you log on Mr benzaken he's my Vanna White right now he will be here at the ends of this uh presentation if you're having problem problems with your email if you are new to the doe and you want to check that email students who already have this email and have been using it in eighth grade it will roll over so you don't have to worry and then the day you pick up your student ID in August we will will also reset passwords that day we will have a brand new account called practice and that account will um show students grades and attendance and period attendance this is a brand new account for us more information will be rolled out during the summer um once we've gotten familiar with it we will let you know how to access it um but it is a new account and it will be a way for you to message also teachers and for teachers to message you we do have an operoo account that is really for students when they have to request a program change so that's really for students to use so all of this information will be given to your student and will also be emailed to you and your child so let's talk about some fun stuff some upcoming dates in August your child will come back to the school they will come on their own and they will take their picture for their ID they will will get their pouch begin their pouch right there they will get their pouch and their student ID you must have your student ID every morning that's how you come into the building you swipe in and allows you to come into the building if you forget your idea you lose your ID there will be staff at the door to help you but you need your student ID and you always need your pouch this is this uh the dates aren't set yet it will be at some point in August around August 3rd except uh expect an email the email will go to the students email and they will let you know what day they have to come in not everyone will come in the same time and day you'll be assigned the time and day to come in if you are on vacation that's fine we'll have another day a couple of days before school starts to pick up your ID but please try to make that update that we give you in August our students are freshmen and sophomore have what we call a 3 to 10 schedule they do not start first period their first period starts third period which is at 9:12 so freshman I hear I hear a lot of excitement so let say that again freshman begins school at 9:12 and they stay till 402 every day except for Wednesday Wednesday they start uh a little bit earlier a few minutes earlier and they leave at 2:24 so most of you are accustomed to having the half a day once a week or half a day is on Wednesday this day never changes if your child comes home and says oh half a day is moved to Friday for this week or it's moved to Monday it's not it does not change so Wednesdays are half a day the only time that changes is parent teacher conferences and you will know that far in advance this information is also in the folder so I see some of you taking a picture don't worry we have it in the folder and it's on the website some resources that we have for students that are struggling we have tutoring we have our Arista students that tutor we have teachers that do tutoring we have a tutoring center a um we have computers for students to use so we have a lot of resources for students speaking of Arista I would like to just take a minute to thank my Arista students that came here tonight to help out and our angry Luigi so thank you guys this goes to show you how much we are a family we have students coming in when they don't even have to be here to help out so thanks guys now all of you were given a pink piece of paper which your child's name on it and their Academy so I want want to explain this because there might be some confusion when you were given an offer from enrollment you were given a program or an academy or a Zone Program for your child to be in you might notice right now that your child might not be in that program that they were assigned through enrollment and let me explain why there is a new state law that class sizes have to be under 25 enrollment didn't really follow that and sent us more students than we can have in our programs so for example I am the uh counselor for the medical program I only have 75 seats in medical but I was sent 180 students so we had to do an internal re-rank and how we rank students is obviously grades standardized test scores and attendance attendance does play a big part in the Academies those students were given a rank from 1 to 75 and those first 75 students got a seat in the medical program does that mean your child can have medical know they can they will be placed on a wait list if we have a student who doesn't want medical or they move or they fail out during the year your child can be placed in the medical program in the middle of the year because we have 2 terms terms high school has 2 terms a fall term and a spring term in the spring term they get a schedule changes again so if you have an enrollment letter and said that you should be in legal or you should be in the travel and tourism and right now you your sticker says zoned it just means we didn't have a seat to accommodate your child at this time or on the other hand let's say you do have a seat medical and you didn't really want medical you just put down all the programs because you're trying to get into New Tricks you rather just leave medical and just go into a Zone Program that's fine in a few minutes I'm going to show you how you could join a wait list or how you can leave the program that you're in okay so that's the I know there's a little confusion about that and I wanted to go over that if you have any general questions about this I will be outside with Miss grottano that's our assistant principal of programming and we will answer your questions 1 on but that is the reason why some of you are not placed in the program that you were given but from enrollment our Academy are on the screen another confusion might be our Honors Academy when you who applied to honors you just applied to a broad title called Honors Academy for our students our high achieving students but our Honors Academy has 4 different programs in it so you are assigned a program in the Honors Academy Academy based on your current Junior High School interest and test scores they every Academy has honors classes as well so don't think oh I'm in medical I'll never take an honors classes know if you should be in honors math you will be placed at honors math but our Honors Academy have have 4 umbrellas underneath the Honors Academy Title so those students who have international studies computer science are heat are now liberal arts those are Honors Academy all the otherme do have honors classes and we will figure out if your child should be in an honors class once we get all the eighth grade test scores back and the eighth grade uh attendance and your final scores from eighth grade Okay so there's still obviously availability in the honors classes I'm just going to play you a short little video and it's a day in the life of some students in a couple of ourm is not all all of them so if you get a little bit of taste of what a a Nutri student goes through oh hey Brian oh hey onesie oh what are you doing here I'm good on business oh what are you doing business oh we do lots of stuff we do business presentations we sell and we do different oh that's so cool can you show come on and thank you for tuning in we have another question and please ask so that was just a little short video of 3 of ourm or business or medical and I travel and tourism as you can see we have several more but just to give you a little taste of what life is like so while your child is here they will take 7 classes and a lunch each day 1 of the classes being English then they will have a math class if your child is accelerated we're waiting for the region scores to come out if they pass the algebra regions they'll be placed in geometry then they will be given science once again if they are accelerated they in biology they'll be placed in either earth science or chemistry based on the scores they got in biology and social studies they will either be given a global class or AP World once again based on your child's eighth grade for then your child will take an elective the elective will either be a class in their Academy so if they're in medical will be a medical class if they're in the Art Academy it will be art right or if you are in zone you will get an elective every student no matter what Academy they're in must take an odd or music so if you have an academy class you'll take Auto music a little bit later but if you are in zone you'll be assigned an order of music if you play an instrument in a few minutes we'll ask if you want to join our music department and you can let us know what instrument you play but we have a lot of different electives to choose from including technology and music and our art electives and another class that you will take while you're here is physical education to talk about physical education and the different teams that we have I'm going to call up our AP or physical education Mr repole uh welcome everybody uh just going to go over briefly with uh Fett and also the Athletics uh physical education you will be taking 5 days a week every single day the same period um it's 5 days a week for your whole entire time here excluding the term you take health we have locker rooms the expectation is to go to locker room get changed in PE clothing and then report to the gym which will go over more when you arrive in September also about the teams we have 2018 teams here that you can participate in and try to participate in if there's a team that's not listed there there is opportunities to play at another nearby School of a specific sport that we don't have after all this you can stay behind and we have a few coaches here as well as myself we'll answer any questions you have about participating at a team trying out and all the guidelines so we can if you wish to do that just back and we'll be up here to answer all those questions thank you Mr repole I'm going to put the back up in a minute um when Mr repole stays behind until talks to you so you guys can see and there's also a list in your folder um of all the teams that we have so school is not just about learning obviously you're here to make friends to be a part of activities and events and to have fun so on the screen you see some of our clubs our clubs change each year and if we have a if you have a club that you would like to see and you have students who would like to join that club with you you we always have students uh creating new clubs so he is just a short list it's also on our school website I know it's a little fuzzy on the screen and we have a events all throughout the year this year we had a huge friendsgiving where we had hundreds of students students that came and ate and The Culinary Academy cooked all the food with our uh chefs that are outside and we have a holiday cookie decorating karaoke radio Bingo field day we have shows this year they put on Mamma Mia last year they put on Mean Girls I don't know what they're putting on next year and plays and much much more obviously we also have international trips for those upper classmen so once you're here and you're Junior and senior you have an um opportunity to go on 1 of our International trips so even though we're in high school happened to your student after they leave what post secondary ideas do they have or Notions that they they want to do so we have some uh opportunities for our students to get college credit while they're still in high school and that is done through our AP classes our college now program which uh both are free and they're part of your your child's school day and we have a dual enrollment program with St Francis for a fee they can get some college credits through it as well we have students that graduate with sometimes 14 credits and that is a half a semester of of school paid for and already taken so your child will have a lot of opportunities to take college level classes while here we also have a community-based organization called CPC that is in our school and they are offering a free summer program for your child here at New Utrecht they do crafts they learn skills about how to be successful in high school they play games they do Sports so if you are interested the information is on the screen on this is a nice way for your child to make friends see the building get accustomed to what it is to be a ute so if you're interested in a summer program and CPC is out in the lobby as well as you get more information if you're interested CPC also does a lot of after-school workshops and touring so they as I mentioned are a community organization and they're here and they offer a lot of different resources and in different languages as well in your folder there is oh before I go into that we have lots of ways for for parents to be involved we have a very active PTA we have a a school leadership team or SLT team and we have a parent Resource Center Our Miss Alvarado sends got a newsletter every month letting parents know what's happening what's coming up what they missed so you can be as active as you want to be here at New York in your folder there's a green page so if you look at that right now if you take it out on the back of that page there are 4 QR codes once again as I mentioned if you want to join a wait list to an academy because you don't want to be in the academy that right now or you're in a Zone Program and you'd like to be an academy there will be a QR code for you there if you would like to take your music and art credit there is a QR code for that as well if you play an instrument and you want to join our band or guitar Ensemble that's the QR code for that and there's 2 other QR codes on that sheet for you 1 of them is to pick your language everyone must take a world language in high school if you you are accelerated in the language now and you want to continue with that language and you should if you do well then you can pick it our languages are Italian Spanish and Mandarin I will let you know that that the Mandarin class is really for students who have a little bit of um of uh they speak it at home or they they've been exposed to it before it's really not for students to learn it for the first time and that QR code is on that Green Sheet as well
