Health Instruction will provide students with the knowledge to make informed, intelligent decisions regarding their personal health and well being.
They will also learn how to access resources and information related to their health.
In Physical Education, students will be exposed to a wide variety of sports and fitness activities.
It is hoped that each student will learn the importance of fitness and will participate in activities that will keep them healthy throughout their lifetime.

Course of Study:
The course of study covers two principal areas:
1. HEALTH - Students must pass 1 term of Health (1 credit course).
2. PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Students must pass 7 terms of Physical Education (.58 credits each for a total of 4 credits).

COURSE DESCRIPTION
General Physical Education classes: These classes will cover a variety of sports and lifetime activities such as, football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, pickle ball, handball, fitness, whiffle ball and softball.

The following classes are limited to 10th – 12 th graders and are in addition to our physical education program:

AEROBICS : Hi\low impact dance aerobics - this is an energetic upbeat aerobic class. It is a great workout for all levels of fitness enthusiasts. This class combines cardiovascular training and toning exercises for a superior total body workout.

BADMINTON: This class will increase a student’s flexibility, coordination, endurance, balance and agility. Students will learn an inexpensive lifelong sport, game strategy, the need for full concentration and good sportsmanship.

FOOTBALL TEAM MEMBERS (JV AND VARSITY): Students will learn the fundamentals of playing PSAL football which will include offensive and defensive plays. The skills that will be learned include but are not limited to, throwing, catching, running with the ball, zone and person to person defense as well as game strategies and situations.

HANDBALL: This class will increase a student’s endurance, agility and strength. Students will learn an inexpensive lifelong sport, game strategy, the need for full concentration and good sportsmanship.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING: Through classroom learning and hands on practice, the students will learn, surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries, rescue skills in the water and on land. First aid training and American Red Cross CPR to help prepare you for an emergency. Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative people. This class will offer students the opportunity to receive lifeguard certification by the NYC Parks department which will enable students to work as a lifeguard at NYC pools and beaches.

SWIMMING: This exercise is the most perfect form of exercise. It is non-weight bearing and imposes no stress on the bones and joints. It improves cardio vascular conditioning and is an effective weight control exercise. This class is for any level of swimmers.

VOLLEYBALL: This class is designed to develop volleyball players of all levels. Students will learn individual and team volleyball skills which will include forearm passing, setting, spikes, digging, serving and team strategies. Students will learn to practice effective communication with teammates. This course also emphasizes the practicing of volleyball skills in order to improve each student's skills. These skills range from serving to passing to setting to attacking (spiking) to blocking. Students will learn all the skills necessary for a player and team to be successful in the game. We also will cover team communication and basic offensive and defensive team strategies.

WEIGHT TRAINING: This class is designed to develop the strength and size of skeletal muscles. It uses the force of gravity in the form of weighted bars, dumbbells to oppose the force generated by muscle generated through concentric and eccentric contractions. It uses a variety of specialized equipment to target specific muscle groups and types of movements.

SPIN/CYCLING CLASS: This class has just been added this year and has become one of our more popular electives. It is a great cardiovascular exercise. Students are able to receive credit for a physical education class by training on a spin bike.

BASKETBALL: This class is designed to develop basketball players at all levels. Students will learn individual and team basketball skills which will include dribbling, passing, hooting and defense. Students will also learn defensive and offensive strategies as well as effective communication with teammates. This course also emphasizes the practicing of basketball skills in order to improve each student's skills. Students will learn all the skills necessary for a player and team to be successful in the game.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL TEAM MEMBERS (JV & VARSITY): Students will learn the fundamentals of playing PSAL baseball. The skills that will be learned include but are not limited to, throwing, catching, running stealing, hitting, bunting, pitching as well as game strategies and situations. Students will also perform speed, agility and strengthening exercises.

FLAG FOOTBALL: Students will learn the fundamentals of playing PSAL football which will include offensive and defensive plays. The skills that will be learned include but are not limited to, throwing, catching, running with the ball, zone and person to person defense as well as game strategies and situations.
